When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with presiding over one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events, the election of a new pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundation of the Catholic Church. Many of the things Cardinal Lawrence and the other priests do during the conclave process in the film are accurate to Catholic belief and centuries-old tradition. The Vatican announces that the throne of the Holy See (the governing body of the Catholic Church) is vacant.

The papal suite is closed with a red ribbon and sealed with a papal wax seal. The College of Cardinals is locked in apartments (called the Domus Sanctae Marthae, or House of Saint Martha) to eat and sleep between votes. The windows and doors of the Sistine Chapel, where the actual elections and voting take place, are closed, shuttered, and locked to preserve the secrecy of the conclave.
