The tyrannical head of the association, Leonard Sr, seeks to steal her property on the cheap
When maple syrup producer Ruth Landry finds her livelihood under attack by greedy competitors who were once her friends, she hatches a plan to get revenge and shake up the industry. Loosely based on the $18 million maple syrup heist from a Quebec warehouse in 2011-12; five people were sentenced to prison. In rural Quebec, Ruth Landry (Margo Martindale) struggles to maintain her maple farm while her husband lies in a coma.
Fargo is strong in this one
Remy Bouchard (Guillaume Cyr) is the lone, frustrated security guard at the association’s warehouse. Mike Byrne (Chris Diamantopoulos) is a low-level security guard for a Boston mob family. Like that franchise, this could have been a movie or a TV show.
Homage has been paid
There’s also snow, eccentric criminals and small-town folk, and even the true/false story. The cast is led by the great Margo Martindale and the slightly deranged Chris Diamantopoulos. There are two things that concern me at first and they hold the show back somewhat.
It takes some getting used to
The story is inherently silly and I’m not sure Fargo’s treatment is worth it. The other issue is the language barrier. Despite the slow start, the show has me wanting more.
